WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has reported several significant seismic events globally in recent days, underscoring the dynamic nature of the Earth’s tectonic activity.
Myanmar Earthquake Causes Widespread Impact
On March 28, 2025, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar near the city of Sagaing at approximately 12:50 PM local time. The shallow depth of 10 kilometers exacerbated the shaking, leading to significant structural damage and casualties. Tremors were felt as far as Bangkok, Thailand, prompting evacuations in high-rise buildings. The USGS has indicated that the death toll has surpassed 700 and warns that it could rise further as rescue operations continue.
Offshore Earthquake Near Tonga
In another event, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake occurred offshore near Tonga on March 30, 2025. The USGS reported that the earthquake struck at a depth of 14.5 kilometers. Despite the strength of the quake, there were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties, and no tsunami warnings were issued.
USGS Enhances Earthquake Monitoring and Research
The USGS continues to monitor seismic activity worldwide and has recently updated the U.S. National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM) for regions including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This update represents the latest assessment of earthquake hazards, aiming to inform building codes, insurance rates, and risk assessments.
Public Encouraged to Report Earthquake Experiences
The USGS encourages individuals who experience earthquakes to report their observations through the “Did You Feel It?” program. This initiative collects firsthand accounts to help scientists better understand the extent and impact of seismic events.
