Point University (HPU), located in High Point, North Carolina, has been making significant strides both academically and athletically. The university has been recognized as the No. 1 Best Regional College in the South for 11 consecutive years by U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Colleges.”
Historic NCAA Tournament Appearance
In a landmark achievement, the HPU men’s basketball team secured its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth by winning the Big South Conference tournament. The Panthers, holding the No. 1 seed, defeated Gardner-Webb, Radford, and Winthrop to clinch the title. In the championship game, they triumphed over No. 3 seed Winthrop with a score of 81-69. This victory earned them a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they are set to face No. 4 seed Purdue on Thursday, March 20, at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island.
Coaching Excellence
The team’s success can be attributed in part to the experience of assistant coach Matt Brady, a 1987 Siena College graduate and Hall of Famer. Brady has participated in the NCAA Tournament with five different schools, bringing a wealth of experience to HPU. He joined High Point’s staff in July to assist head coach Alan Huss, particularly with defense.
Community Engagement and Achievements
Beyond athletics, HPU continues to engage with and contribute to the community. The university recently raised a record $285,000 for the United Way of Greater High Point, demonstrating its commitment to local initiatives. Additionally, nine HPU students and one alumnus have been named semifinalists for the 2024-25 Fulbright U.S. Student Program, setting a new record for the university.
Upcoming Events
The HPU men’s basketball team is scheduled to play Purdue in the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, March 20, at 12:40 p.m. This game marks a significant milestone for the university and its athletic program.
