Judge Frank Caprio Announces Retirement After 38 Years on the Bench

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Judge Frank Caprio, renowned for his compassionate approach in the courtroom and his role in the popular television series “Caught in Providence,” has officially announced his retirement after serving as the Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court for 38 years. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Providence City Hall on March 29, 2025.

A Legacy of Compassionate Justice

Born Francesco Caprio on November 24, 1936, in the Federal Hill neighborhood of Providence, Judge Caprio’s journey in law began after earning his bachelor’s degree from Providence College and his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School. He was appointed as the Chief Judge of the Municipal Court of Providence in 1985, a position he held until his retirement in 2023. His tenure was marked by a unique blend of empathy and humor, which garnered him national and international recognition. His courtroom proceedings, televised on “Caught in Providence,” showcased his understanding and leniency, especially towards individuals facing financial hardships. This approach earned him the moniker “The Nicest Judge in the World.”

Health Challenges and Retirement

In December 2023, Judge Caprio publicly disclosed his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. He underwent treatment and completed his final radiation session on May 24, 2024. Despite his health challenges, he continued to engage with the public, sharing messages of gratitude and reflections on life’s blessings.

Community and Family

Beyond his judicial duties, Judge Caprio has been deeply involved in community service. He established scholarships at various institutions, including the Antonio “Tup” Caprio Scholarship Fund at Suffolk University School of Law, aimed at supporting Rhode Island students committed to improving access to legal services in urban core neighborhoods. He has also been active in organizations such as the Boys Town of Italy and the Rhode Island Food Bank. Married to Joyce E. Caprio for over five decades, they have five children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Publications and Ongoing Engagement

In June 2024, Judge Caprio announced the upcoming release of his book, “Frank Caprio: Compassion in the Court,” scheduled for publication on February 4, 2025. The book is expected to delve into his experiences on the bench and his philosophy of compassionate justice.
