Massive 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Myanmar
Mandalay, Myanmar – A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 30, 2025, causing massive destruction and loss of life. The quake, which hit near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, has resulted in over 1,700 confirmed deaths, more than 3,400 injuries, and at least 300 people missing.
The tremor, which occurred around 2:15 PM local time, collapsed numerous buildings, including residential homes, commercial structures, and places of worship. Roads and bridges suffered severe damage, and communication networks have been severely disrupted, making rescue efforts difficult.

The disaster struck during the holy month of Ramadan, tragically taking the lives of over 700 worshippers who were gathered for Friday prayers. At least 60 mosques in the Mandalay region have been either heavily damaged or completely destroyed. This has left many in the local Muslim community devastated, as they grapple with the loss of loved ones and the destruction of their places of worship.
Earthquake Felt in Neighboring Thailand
The tremors were also felt in Thailand, where at least 18 people have been reported dead. A partially constructed skyscraper in Bangkok collapsed, leading to multiple casualties and injuries. Despite this, Thailand’s central bank and financial institutions have stated that economic operations remain unaffected.
Tonga Hit by 7.0-Magnitude Earthquake
Meanwhile, in the early hours of March 31, a separate 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck near the Pacific island nation of Tonga. The earthquake caused minor damage but led to brief tsunami evacuations. Residents in the capital, Nuku’alofa, fled to higher ground before authorities confirmed that the risk had passed. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

Seismologists warn that both Myanmar and Tonga may experience strong aftershocks in the coming days. Residents in affected areas have been urged to stay alert and prepare for further tremors. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and mobilizing support for those in need.
