Measles Symptoms: What to Look Out For

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that primarily affects children but can also impact adults. It spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing. Symptoms typically appear 10 to 14 days after exposure.

Early Symptoms (Prodromal Stage)

These symptoms may last for 2-4 days before the rash appears:

  • High Fever (Often 103-105°F)
  • Cough (Persistent and dry)
  • Runny Nose (Similar to a cold)
  • Red, Watery Eyes (Conjunctivitis)
  • Fatigue & Body Aches

Koplik’s Spots (2-3 Days Before Rash)

  • Small white spots with a bluish-white center on the inside of the cheeks or gums.
  • A distinctive feature of measles that confirms diagnosis.

Measles Rash (3-5 Days After Symptoms Begin)

  • Starts as flat red spots on the face (near the hairline).
  • Spreads downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet.
  • Some spots may merge, forming larger blotches.
  • The rash lasts about 5-7 days before fading.

Other Possible Complications

  • Ear Infections (Common in children)
  • Diarrhea & Dehydration
  • Pneumonia (Serious in infants & adults)
  • Encephalitis (Brain swelling, rare but dangerous)

When to Seek Medical Attention

  • High fever (above 104°F) that persists
  • Severe breathing difficulties
  • Confusion or seizures
  • Persistent vomiting or inability to drink fluids

Prevention

The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) is the best way to prevent measles.
