Orlando Magic Guard Jalen Suggs Faces Indefinite Sideline Due to Knee Injury Amid Breakout Season

Jalen Suggs, born on June 3, 2001, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, is a professional basketball player for the Orlando Magic in the NBA. He played college basketball at Gonzaga University before being selected fifth overall in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Magic.

Early Life and High School Career

Suggs attended Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, where he excelled in both basketball and football. As a freshman, he averaged 21.5 points per game, leading his team to a Class 2A state championship. Throughout his high school career, Suggs secured three consecutive state titles and was named Minnesota Mr. Basketball and Mr. Football in his senior year, becoming the first athlete in state history to earn both honors in the same academic year.

College Career at Gonzaga

In his lone season at Gonzaga (2020–2021), Suggs averaged 14.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. He earned consensus second-team All-American honors and was instrumental in leading the Bulldogs to the NCAA championship game.

Professional Career with the Orlando Magic

Suggs was drafted fifth overall by the Orlando Magic in the 2021 NBA Draft. He made his NBA debut on October 20, 2021, scoring 10 points against the San Antonio Spurs. Despite a rookie season hampered by injuries, including a fractured right thumb and subsequent ankle surgery, Suggs showcased his potential on the court.

In the 2023–2024 season, Suggs recorded a career-high 27 points in a victory over the Denver Nuggets on January 5, 2024. He continued to elevate his performance during the playoffs, contributing significantly to the Magic’s postseason efforts. His defensive prowess earned him a spot on the NBA All-Defensive Second Team, making him the third player in franchise history to receive this honor and the first since Dwight Howard in the 2011–2012 season.

Contract Extension and Recent Developments

On October 21, 2024, Suggs and the Magic agreed to a five-year, $150.5 million contract extension, underscoring the organization’s commitment to his development and future with the team.

However, in February 2025, Suggs suffered a trochlea injury in his left knee, sidelining him indefinitely. Prior to the injury, he was having a breakout season, averaging career highs in points, rebounds, steals, and minutes per game. His absence poses a significant challenge for the Magic as they navigate the remainder of the season.

Upcoming Orlando Magic Games

As the Magic continue their season, fans and teammates alike are hopeful for Suggs’ full recovery and return to the court, where his talent and leadership have become invaluable assets to the team.
