Punta Cana, Dominican Republic – The disappearance of 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki has sparked an intensive search and investigation in the Dominican Republic. Konanki vanished on March 6, 2025, while on a spring break trip with friends at the Riu República Hotel in Punta Cana.
Disappearance Details
Konanki, a Virginia native of Indian origin, was last seen around 4:15 a.m. on March 6. Surveillance footage captured her walking towards the beach in the company of 22-year-old American tourist Joshua Riibe, a senior at Minnesota’s St. Cloud State University. The footage shows them holding hands before heading to the beach area. Her friends reported her missing later that day when she did not return to the hotel.
Discovery of Personal Items
Authorities discovered clothing believed to belong to Konanki on a beach chair near the area she was last seen. Images obtained by local media depict a white netted sarong draped over a beach chair and a pair of sand-covered beige flip-flops beside it. These items closely resemble the attire Konanki was wearing on the night of her disappearance.
Person of Interest
Joshua Riibe has been named a person of interest in the case. He has provided conflicting accounts of the events leading up to Konanki’s disappearance. Initially, Riibe claimed he saved Konanki from rough waters but lost sight of her in the darkness. He has since refused to answer key questions, and his parents have enlisted legal counsel on his behalf.

Dominican authorities, with assistance from the FBI, are actively investigating the case. Search efforts include the use of drones, helicopters, and detection dogs to scour the waters off the island’s east coast.
